The Second Key Element of Successful Internet Marketing – Desire and Determination

I started out on my adventures in the internet marketing scene some five years or more ago and at that time I never fully appreciated the levels of desire and determination that would be required to eventually be successful. I really fell for the fast talk that internet marketing success would be painless and instantaneous.

Time and time again I invested in ‘get rich quick’ schemes, and failed miserably at each one. It takes some painful experiences to finally accept that ‘too good to be true’ is the real truth, and that there are no short cuts to internet marketing success.

And why should there be an easy way to success? Any worthwhile venture in our lives requires real desire and determination. To be successful we really need to want something – as we say, with a ‘burning desire’. I always refer back to my sporting heroes and recognise the determination that they have developed to get to the top.

The great Lance Armstrong is a real hero. In my book the greatest cyclist of all time. Not only did he win the toughest race in the world, the Tour de France, a record seven times between 1999 and 2005, but he also battled cancer along the way and overcame incredible odds.

With the pressures of every-day life we can’t all achieve the levels of determination demonstrated by top sports men and women, we still need to ‘hang-in there’ when the going gets tough, and really show a desire to fulfil our dreams, whatever they might be.

Internet marketing almost requires a health warning for those about to embark on the journey. Any newcomers to the internet scene need to accept that in order to be successful they will need to make a significant effort for months, probably years. Ten years or so ago it was relatively easy to develop an internet presence, because there just wasn’t the competition out there.

How times have changed! It’s a bit daunting to realise that ten years ago a dozen or so articles would get you ranked highly in Google, that figure has now increased dramatically. A writer is now expected to produce in excess of 100 articles, probably nearer 250 or more, before they begin to see success.

Prospective internet marketers must accept the need for real determination, in that developing website content has to be a daily ritual over a prolonged period of time. Referring back to our sporting heroes, none of them have achieved great success without thousands of hours of training and skills practice.

Putting in those hours can be really hard work, and you really need to cultivate a deep desire to be successful. In his book ‘The Talent Code’, Daniel Coyle has researched just what it takes to get to the very top, and the quoted figure is 10,000 hours over a number of years. This is a phenomenal commitment, and probably way out of reach of most of us.

Like me many potential internet marketers have full time jobs and it is important to stop and consider just how many hours can you put into your internet marketing projects? Consider a thousand hours a year – does it sound feasible? That works out at twenty hours a week. I suggest you try to achieve this in one week, and consider how realistic it is as a target.

I can usually commit about ten hours a week to my internet work. Some weeks I achieve more than ten hours, and in other weeks less. My life is very busy, but I have a real desire to be an internet marketing success, and I am determined to go the distance.

So if you’re considering an internet marketing business then that’s really great news! But please be realistic – do not fall for any of the get-rich-quick schemes. They have a 100% failure rate, and they just cost you loads of money. Accept that you will need real desire and determination to succeed, and a willingness to put in the hours and hours of hard slog. If your desire and determination is big enough, then you’ll achieve your big dreams – just commit and go for it!
